Somersby, St Margaret

Somersby, St Margaret*

St. Margaret’s claim to fame is that George Clayton Tennyson, the father of Poet Laureate, Alfred, Lord Tennyson was rector here and in nearby Bag Enderby from 1806-1831 and is buried in the churchyard. Alfred was born across the road in the cream-coloured rambling house and spent the first 28 years of his life here. St. Margaret’s is early Perpendicular in style but was thoroughly restored in 1833. It contains some interesting information and artefacts relating to the poet.
