High Toynton, St John the Baptist

High Toynton, St John the Baptist (early June 2025)

After the collapse of the Tower in Jan 2020, we are delighted to be opening a dramatically restored church, thanks to funders such as National Lottery Heritage and others. We are a Doubly Thankful Village, one of only 16 in England and Wales – where all personnel returned from both World Wars. There will be a display of the village history of this positive and cohesive small community through the years from Medieval times onwards, together with a Music Festival on the Sunday.

Opening Times: 13-14th September
Saturday 10am–5pm
Sunday 10am–5pm

Addlethorpe, St Nicholas

Addlethorpe, St Nicholas*

15th century ‘Cathedral of the Marsh’ completed around 1423. The church retains most of the original features in a good state of preservation: six carved oak screens, south porch notable for the level of fine detail, both inside and out, with an inscription recording the original benefactor. Medieval ‘angel roof’ adorned with winged angels, green men and other curious carvings. Information display boards around the church. The belfry and tower will be open to visitors, accessed by spiral stair. The tower contains six bells cast in 1770 by Henry Harrison, bellfounder of Barrow on Humber. The bells will be rung throughout both days.

Utterby, St Andrew

Utterby, St Andrew

St Andrew’s Church is a Grade II* listed building, originally founded on this site in 1220. The current structure dates from the early 14th century, with additions made in the 15th century.

The surrounding churchyard features a number of interesting monuments, A historic stone causeway connects the churchyard’s west gate to a 14th century packhorse bridge, which is a scheduled monument.

Inside the church, visitors can also view an exhibition of hand-embroidered kneelers. These were lovingly crafted by ladies from the village over a 12-year period, more than 20 years ago, as a celebration of community and heritage.

Fotherby St Mary

St. Mary’s, a James Fowler Church was rebuilt and reopened in 1863. The main benefactor was Everitt Allenby. His portrait is to be found in the church and his burial tomb is close to the south wall, in the churchyard. The new tapestry kneelers will be on display, demonstrating the work of the Church Mice Crafters who have expertly designed and crafted them, reflecting the life of the village and highlighting focal points within the parish. Photographs on a display board show how they are constructed. The Fotherby Archive, also found in the church, will be available to view.
