Willoughby with Sloothby, St Helena

Willoughby with Sloothby, St Helena*
St Helena’s dates back to the 14 th century; in the bell tower there is what Pevsner describes as ‘a wonderfully primeval ladder’. The octagonal font is where John Smith was baptised in 1580; he later became famous as Captain John Smith, a leader of the Jamestown Colony in Virginia.

The chancel windows depict scenes from the Jamestown Colony and include Pocahontas, wife of John Rolfe. St Helena’s is a member of ‘Caring for God’s Acre’ and there is a nature trail in the churchyard.

Markby, St Peter

Markby, St Peter

The only thatched church in Lincolnshire, built in 1611. It fell into disrepair in late 19C and a corrugated tin church was erected next to it for services and the thatched for special occasions. In 1962, the tin church was failing and it was decided to renovate the original church.

Today, the interior of the church still bears traces of its history – Norman dog-toothed decoration on the chancel arch, former oak cross beam rescued from the roof bearing a date of 1611, the ancient font from the old parish church, 13th Century rose sculpture and the 19 th Century box pews.

Hannah cum Hagnaby, St Andrew

Hannah cum Hagnaby, St Andrew

St Andrew’s Church is a Georgian, Grade 1 listed building of simple design, incorporating some reused masonry, which is medieval in origin. The church is surrounded by arable farmland and sits in an elevated position, which gives interesting views of the surrounding area. The interior remains largely unchanged since 1753, including its original oak-panelled box pews. It has a two-decker pulpit and an unusual three-sided altar rail extended in a semi-circle at the front, which is hinged and opens outwards. Cleverly built into one of the pews is a marble font.

Alford, St Wilfrid

Alford, St Wilfrid

There has been a church on this site since around 1150, and parts of the current building date back to the 14th Century. There are some original features amongst which are a 14th Century screen, a fine Jacobean pulpit, traces of 16th Century glass and a 17th Century tomb in the chancel. The church was restored in the 1860s when the north aisle was added. Over the south porch is the Parvis Room, used as the first grammar school in Elizabethan times. One of its pupils was possibly John Smith. Saved from death by Pocahontas, he became Virginia’s first governor.

Belleau, St John the Baptist

Belleau, St John the Baptist*

There are numerous lovely comments by people who visit the church during the year and write in the visitor book. A comment that typifies this, written 18th April 2014 from Katy Davis, Coventry (aged 12 and a half): “It is one of my favourite churches. Whenever I go in I think how old and beautiful it is. It is very quiet and I really do like it. It truly takes my breath away.” Her mother added: “A nice place to pray and to calm your thoughts.”
