Yarburgh, St John the Baptist

Yarburgh, St John (Image Churches Conservation Trust)

St John's was rebuilt after a fire in 1405 and has a prominent sandstone tower which serves as a local landmark. The roofs and many of the fittings were renewed in 1854 during a restoration by James Fowler of Louth. The tower is famed for its west doorway, which features superbly detailed carvings of Adam and Eve and the serpent, the Lamb of God and other Biblical themes.

Goulceby, All Saints

Goulceby, All Saints by Angela Montague

An unassuming Grade II listed parish church, All Saints was rebuilt in 1908, reusing medieval fragments. All Saints has a slate roof and one space containing the bellcote, nave and chancel, with the north porch and vestry. Three of the windows are late 14th century, as is the large octagonal font with St Andrew’s crosses incised on each side. There will be an art and craft exhibition at the church on Saturday September 13 and Sunday September 14.

Utterby, St Andrew

Utterby, St Andrew

St Andrew’s Church is a Grade II* listed building, originally founded on this site in 1220. The current structure dates from the early 14th century, with additions made in the 15th century.

The surrounding churchyard features a number of interesting monuments, A historic stone causeway connects the churchyard’s west gate to a 14th century packhorse bridge, which is a scheduled monument.

Inside the church, visitors can also view an exhibition of hand-embroidered kneelers. These were lovingly crafted by ladies from the village over a 12-year period, more than 20 years ago, as a celebration of community and heritage.

Visit our 45-seater building that punches above its weight. The little church in the Hornby layouts is modelled on our building which was first erected 1000 years ago. It still is a vibrant reminder that communities, however small, are just as important today as they ever were.

Haugham - All Saints

Haugham - All Saints by Ashley Taylor (Push Creativity)
The spire of All Saints soars above a round of trees in the open country of the Wolds, visible for miles around. As you reach All Saints on foot down a green lane, you might expect a rustic church - in fact, the building is an example of ecclesiastical elegance.

It was built in 1840, modelled on the church of St James in nearby Louth. Inside, the church is solid and welcoming. There are handsome pews, a timber roof, and several memorials to Lincolnshire people.

Great Carlton, St John the Baptist

Great Carlton, St John the Baptist*

Within Great Carlton village, screened behind trees with a long drive, described in The King's England (1949) "... as having an approach unsurpassed in all Lincolnshire," leading to the car park.

The Mid Marsh Carltons, comprising Great, Little and Castle Carlton, have a long history with catalogued artefacts from CC on display in church dating back to the Neolithic Period. There will also be a display covering the 21st century discovery of a Saxon Island in LC called the Mystery in the Marsh and a display on the Mid Marsh Churches and Chapels.

A 10-minute walk away, on the path between GC and LC, there is the award winning graveyard of the now demolished St Edith’s Church, Little Carlton which is also the location of the Saxon Island.

On Sunday we have a service of Holy Communion at 9:30 am and visitors are most welcome to join us for the service and light refreshments afterwards.

Fulstow, St Lawrence

Fulstow, St Lawrence

St Lawrence’s has 13th century origins and evidence of this can be seen on the walls. Restoration took place in 1868. The church lost its tower through collapse in the 1720s and only one bell remains in the Victorian bellcote.

The shaft of a medieval cross stands in the churchyard. Two medieval effigies are in the porch. St Lawrence’s is situated serenely at the edge of the village and is ideal for quiet prayer and contemplation.

Fotherby St Mary

St. Mary’s, a James Fowler Church was rebuilt and reopened in 1863. The main benefactor was Everitt Allenby. His portrait is to be found in the church and his burial tomb is close to the south wall, in the churchyard. The new tapestry kneelers will be on display, demonstrating the work of the Church Mice Crafters who have expertly designed and crafted them, reflecting the life of the village and highlighting focal points within the parish. Photographs on a display board show how they are constructed. The Fotherby Archive, also found in the church, will be available to view.

Covenham St Mary, St Mary

Covenham St Mary, St Mary*

Items of interest include an Easter Sepulchre and what is thought to be a leper’s squint.

The font is decorated with instruments of the Passion. Several of the brackets which support the roof are carved with corbels, some decorated with grotesque figures, one of which we understand to be quite rare. Another, it has been suggested, is Sheela Na Gig.

There are sundials on the southern outer wall and, oddly, one on the northern wall.

Several builders’ marks are scratched into both the outer and inner walls, the clearest being a playing card.
