Horncastle, St Mary

Horncastle St Mary's (photo Ashley Taylor for ExploreChurches)

The third church built on the site. Completed around 1160, the oldest part is the tower. Nearby parts of the Roman wall. Connections with Alfred, Lord Tennyson, the Dymoke family (King’s Champion) and John Franklin. Beautiful stained glass, ten guilded angels in the nave roof, lepers’ squint, medieval scythes (linked to the War of the Roses or the Lincolnshire Rising).
