| Alvingham, St Adelwold* |
Two churches in one churchyard; not unique, but unusual. St Adelwold’s for Alvingham and St Mary’s for North Cockerington. St Mary’s is a redundant church, but open with monuments to a 14th century knight, with a lion at his feet. St Mary’s was the chapel for the
Gilbertine Alvingham Priory and is on the Gilbertine trail. St Gilbert founded the Gilbertine Order, where he founded a double monastery of canons regular and nuns, an order for both men and women. There is a prayer area in Lincoln Cathedral with a collection of large ceramics known as the ‘Gilbert Pots’ representing Gilbert and the Order’s women and men.
