Markby, St Peter* |
The tiny, thatched church, the only one in Lincolnshire,
was constructed from materials taken from Markby
Priory close by, which was dissolved in 1534. The north
round-arched doorway is medieval and the chancel arch,
with its dog tooth carving, is Norman. Just inside the
doorway are some original benches of the church and
an old chest reputedly made from the beams of the old
priory. The box pews and the pulpit belong to the early
part of the 19th century. The original roof was tiled, but
was thatched in 1672 by a churchwarden who took the
tiles in exchange.
