Raithby, Wesley's Chapel

Raithby Wesley's Chapel*

This oldest Methodist place of worship in Lincolnshire, dedicated by John Wesley, was constructed by his close friend Robert Carr Brackenbury. Accessed via a double-curving stone staircase, the wonderfully atmospheric building will host a display ‘The Brackenburys and the World-wide Parish’ describing the ministry in the British Isles and Channel Isles of Brackenbury, the landowner who provided this little building and became a missionary for the movement. His widow, Sarah, continued his work, funding missionaries to South Africa and Fiji. On Saturday morning c11.00 am Revd Alan Robson will talk about Wesley Hymns, the subject of an additional exhibition.

The National Churches Trust winner in two categories (England & Overall UK) for community-led volunteer initiatives. Heritage Lottery fabric restorations. Lying directly opposite Bolingbroke Castle, birthplace of Henry IV. Medieval graffiti, relics of original paintwork, working belltower, grave of Susannah Flinders, Henry lV & Civil War exhibitions. 

See & hear our now fully restored 1910 historic pipe organ, complete with hand pump mechanisms. 

Visit the restored former Gas House, now a heritage exhibition centre, telling Old Bolingbroke’s stories and watch the video around the rescue of our historic church. Short guided tours available.

She has performed at various prestigious venues, including the Edinburgh International Harp Festival and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. 

Eira is also recognized as one of the UK's leading harp teachers and has been a guest performer with numerous orchestras and choirs."

Hundleby, St Mary

Hundleby, St Mary

A small friendly church. This is the third church on this site. The first was listed in the Domesday Book. This was replaced in the 15th century. It was rebuilt in the 1850s after falling into disrepair, using some of the original Spilsby sandstone. This is very soft and much loved by masonry bees! Come and see the stained-glass windows (including a little medieval stained glass above the altar) and single manual organ. Harvest flowers. Harvest service at 3pm on Sunday 6th. All welcome.

Thornton, St Wilfrid


Thornton, St Wilfrid*

ADDITIONAL TO THE BROCHURE: FIRST WEEKEND

This church has been omitted from the brochure, but is taking part in the festival on the first weekend. Please support them with a visit. 

St Wilfrid’s Church in Thornton, near Horncastle, is a small, 15th-century Grade II listed church, Constructed from greenstone, the church underwent significant restoration in 1890 by architect Ewan Christian, who added a north aisle, vestry, and raised the tower. 

The church houses a unique, historically significant organ, believed to be one of the oldest in Britain, possibly dating from the 1680’s and once in Magdalen College, Oxford, and features a hand-pumped lever, mahogany casing, and rare pipework.

Hot dogs with cold and hot drinks provided 12 – 2pm on Saturday; donations welcome.

Revesby, St Lawrence

This elegant Grade II listed Anglican church, which seats 200 parishioners, was built in the decorated style during the late 19th century on the site of a previous church built during the early 18th century. That church was built on the site of an even earlier church, dating back to the Norman era. The church has close connections with Sir Joseph Banks. Along with the original Joseph Banks Banner is a specially commissioned framed embroidery, which will be on display alongside a display kindly loaned by the Sir Joseph Banks Centre, Horncastle.

Minting, St Andrew


Minting appears in the Domesday book and is the site of a priory linked to the French Abbey of St Benedict on Loire. The church was rebuilt in 1863, although the chancel is mainly original. It contains the remains of two naively carved stone slabs found in the churchyard and are believed to date to the 13th century. Minting is a ‘thankful village’ and we have commemorative plaques remembering all those who safely returned from WW1. St Andrew’s continues to be a place of worship with one service per month, as well as annual Harvest and Christmas services. Displays of local history and live music played during the festival. We are a Doubly Thankful Village: one of 15 churches in England and Wales where all soldiers returned home in both wars. An I POINT has been recently installed. Use the QR Code or tablet device in church to gain access to a wealth of fascinating facts. Learn about our social history, about the soldiers who fought, about wildlife in the graveyard and what happened after the tower collapsed 6 years ago, as well as related games and quizzes.

Bucknall, St Margaret

St. Margaret’s Church, Bucknall, dates in part to the Norman period and was restored by local architect James Fowler in 1875. Though small, it is full of character. This year’s theme, Life’s Big Moments, explores the milestones that shape us — beginnings, commitments, celebrations and farewells. Through displays of weddings, baptisms, funerals and the seasons of the Christian year, discover how the Church has marked life for generations. Refreshments and a tombola will be available, with proceeds supporting our roof replacement fund.

Belchford - St Peter & St Paul

Belchford, St Peter & St Paul*

Although most of the present church only dates from the 19th century, there is positive evidence of a church in the village since the 12th century. When entering the church through the 18th century semi-circular headed west doorway, the colour of the east window casts a pale blue hue across the chancel and nave. Of particular note are: - the ornate 19th century altar and reredos with painted panels depicting the virgin and child and apostles - The pulpit with panelled sides, one containing a relief of Magi, with virgin and child - Decorated organ - Painted chancel roof.

Willoughby with Sloothby, St Helena

Willoughby with Sloothby, St Helena*

St Helena’s dates back to the 14th century; in the bell tower there is what Pevsner describes as ‘a wonderfully primeval ladder’. The octagonal font is where John Smith was baptised in 1580; he later became famous as Captain John Smith, a leader of the Jamestown Colony in Virginia. The chancel windows depict scenes from the Jamestown Colony and include Pocahontas, wife of John Rolfe. St Helena’s is a member of ‘Caring for God’s Acre’ and there is a nature trail in the churchyard.

14th Century church in a quiet rural setting. There are good examples of poppy head carvings and the probably unique allegorical painting of the defeat of the Spanish Armada, 3 feet 1 inch high and 6 feet wide. Birthplace of Revd Thomas Scott, commentator on the bible, and John Stockton, Lord Mayor of London in 1740. Site of 2 Commonwealth War Graves. Hot and cold drinks, cakes will be available. We welcome families to create artwork on our chalk board. The church is dog friendly.

Addlethorpe, St Nicholas

Addlethorpe, St Nicholas*

15th century ‘Cathedral of the Marsh’ completed around 1423. The church retains most of the original features in a good state of preservation: six carved oak screens, south porch notable for the level of fine detail, both inside and out, with an inscription recording the original benefactor. Medieval ‘angel roof’ adorned with winged angels, green men and other curious carvings. Information display boards around the church. The belfry and tower will be open to visitors, accessed by spiral stair. The tower contains six bells cast in 1770 by Henry Harrison, bellfounder of Barrow on Humber. The bells will be rung throughout both days.

Wold Newton, All Saints


A beautiful Victorian Grade II listed church by James Fowler (1861) sits in a remote and peaceful churchyard above the hamlet, decorated in the High Church style, with statues of a number of saints with a local attachment. A fine example of a Forster and Andrews organ available to play. Lovely Victorian and medieval stained-glass, and a collection of carved masonry from abbeys across Lincolnshire. Accessible by popular walking and cycling routes, car or powered wheelchair support may be available. Light refreshments nearby.

All Saints church Wold Newton will be opening its doors to the sound of folk music as part of their offering for Open Churches weekend.

Folk musician Liam Robinson will be performing a short concert of traditional Lincolnshire music and song at 2pm on Sunday 13th September. Entrance is free but donations to the church are welcome.

Liam is an entertaining and engaging performer, whose informal but informative style has seen him appear at events across the UK, Europe and North America.

Binbrook, St Mary & St Gabriel

Binbrook, St Mary & St Gabriel*

Designed by James Fowler, the church was consecrated in August 1869 with a dual dedication, replacing the two village churches. It is in an Early English style with a slate roof and decorative ridge tiles. Built in ironstone with a broach spire, and a chancel with a polygonal apse. When RAF Binbrook closed a relationship was maintained with members of 460 SQRAAF. A memorial stained-glass window, commemorating squadrons serving at RAF Binbrook, was placed in the church. There is a Roll of Honour for 460 squadron available to see. A warm welcome awaits visitors to the ‘Cathedral in the Wolds’.

South Elkington, All Saints

As recorded in the Domesday Book, there has been a church here on this site for over a thousand years. In its gentle Wolds setting, blessed with abundant woods and water, it has been the heart of Christian witness in the area through the centuries. The earliest parts of today’s stone-built church date to the 13th century; at that time it was only nave, south aisle and chancel, with the tower being added in the 15th century, and finally the Victorians carried out extensive refurbishments and introduced the north aisle, organ and vestry.
