Covenham St Mary, St Mary*
|
Items of interest include an Easter Sepulchre and what is
thought to be a leper’s squint. The font is decorated with
instruments of the Passion. Several of the brackets which
support the roof are carved with corbels, some decorated
with grotesque figures, one of which we understand to be
quite rare. Another, it has been suggested, is Sheela Na
Gig. There are sundials on the southern outer wall and,
oddly, one on the northern wall. Several builders’ marks
are scratched into both the outer and inner walls, the
clearest being a playing card.
