Halton Holegate, St Andrew*

Hilltop 14th century church commanding wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. Peaceful setting. Carved roof bosses and ten wooden angels complement richly carved poppy head pew ends depicting animals, birds, flora and fauna. Stone effigy of a recumbent knight, thought to represent Henry-de-Halton, from around 1350. Alongside, an ancient burial slab, when translated reads "Here lies Sir Walter de Bec on whose soul may God have mercy", dated around 1250AD.
